Custom Overmolding of a Grip for an Ultrasonic Dental Tool

ProPlas Technologies was contracted by a customer in the dental industry to complete the manufacturing of the grip for an ultrasonic dental tool. We designed the over-mold to meet customer requirements, choosing thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) for the construction. Our 65 ton electric molding machine was employed for the over-molding/insert molding process. Since a scrap part on the grip would mean rejecting the entire $54 assembly, the rejection rate had to be kept as low as possible. The grip is available in 6 color options and 2 styles, for a combined 12 possibilities. The molded grip was assembled to completion, and was subjected to comprehensive testing including dimensional, visual, and functional criteria.
The completed grip measured 2" in length with a diameter of 0.400". The original tooling and samples were produced in 9 weeks. Typical production leadtimes are approximately 10 days, with shipments of 400 units per month throughout the USA. This part is manufactured under FDA oversight and meets the rigorous quality standards of ISO 9001 and ISO 13485.
